Getting stood up when dating is embarrassing.
Getting stood up by a client is a financial disaster.
Always ask for a 50% deposit upfront to cover overhead and engage the client.
This approach covers your initial costs and secures your commitment to the project.
Sometimes clients will postpone a project or drag their feet sharing assets and things you need. Wasted time can really mess up your business as a freelancer.
To streamline the payment process, I try to establish a clear schedule for the remaining balance, whether it’s tied to project milestones or a lump sum payment.
Even if the project evolves, which it usually does, I’m covered.
I made this short email template you can use to send to your client:
”Dear [Client’s Name],
I’m excited to get started on [Project Name]! To ensure a smooth workflow and cover initial costs, I require a 50% deposit before beginning the project. This upfront payment helps manage resources and demonstrates mutual commitment to the project.
The remaining balance will be due [specify payment terms, e.g., upon completion, at specific milestones, etc.]. Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional details.
Looking forward to working together!
Best regards,
[Your Name]”
This is direct and fair. I’ve been burned before so I’ve smartened up over the years. As a freelancer your time really is money.
Hope this helps,
Danny
