I got this question on YouTube this week by a subscriber:
“Struggling to get my first client at the moment with no case studies. People don't trust me even if I offer a free design. Any advice?”
1. Tap Into Your Network
Start with friends and family who are thinking about starting a business or already have one. Offer to help them build their website, even at a discounted rate. Not only does this get you some experience, but it also adds credibility to your work.
2. Charitable Organizations
Another route is to reach out to charitable organizations. Many of them need website upgrades but have low budgets.
I don't recommend working for free in general, offering your services at a lower rate to organizations that align with your values can be a great way to get started while building up your portfolio.
3. Local Business Prototypes
If you still can't find anyone willing to trust your skills, take a proactive approach. Find a local business or one in your niche, and create a new version of their website as a prototype.
Present it in your portfolio as a case study: "Here's how I would improve your website." This can demonstrate your skills in action and show potential clients exactly what you can do.
The key is to show, not just tell, what you can deliver—even if that means doing work upfront. Once you have that first case study, getting future clients becomes much easier.
