“So, what do you do?”
I came home to Ireland for a wedding. We’ve all been to social events like this.
Having fun, seeing old friends and meeting people we don’t know yet.
When we first meet anyone, the conversation inevitably leads to this question.
It’s easy to feel uncomfortable answering it. Like our careers somehow define who we are.
It’s even harder when you’re not satisfied with what you do for money.
After starting my own business and making my own way in the world, I enjoy talking to people about it.
Sometimes people express fear about reliable income or business sustainability etc.
But, usually people are enthusiastically impressed and want to learn how to do it.
Anyone can start a business or become a freelancer. All you need are some difficult-to-acquire skills and the confidence to fail and keep going.
When I tell people that I set my own hours, book holidays whenever I want, decide on which projects interest me and the multiple streams of income I’ve set up, they want it for themselves.
Most people think this lifestyle is impossible to reach for them, but it isn’t.
I went from teaching high-school science to this in the space of a year.
You can too.
